Antique Yellow Glazed Clay Orjol in a Very Rare Form with Filters c. 1890
Antique Continental glazed yellow color clay orjol in a very rare form c. More particularly its vernacular manufacture is attributed to extreme southwestern France or nearby in Spain. A prototype orjol was intended for water. However, it is evident this highly specialized orjol type vessel was made to order for a utilitarian reason requiring filtered mouth openings and narrow pouring spout. It possesses idiosyncrasies reflective of its original firing and oxidation more than a century ago. Body: Glazed orjol sits on a flat base under a rounded terracotta body leading upward to a truncated neck with two narrow, graduated, mouths with flared lips and fixed strainers. The slightly taller mouth opening has a built-in openwork strainer with four sieves. The lower mouth opening has a built-in openwork strainer with two sieves. Also, it has a tubular side handle surmounted by a conical spout with a small round opening for pouring liquids. Dimension: 20 cm or 7-7/8 (height). Antique glazed clay orjol type vessel in very good condition. Its glaze is thick and coarse with some irregularities from its original firing. There are missing slivers of glazed clay around the top mouth openings. There is some kind of an unconnected pellet inside this vessel that rattles when it’s shaken.
