Very Rare Solid Silver Bodkin. C 1610 James 1
Very Rare Solid Silver Engraved Bodkin. C 1620 James 1 / Charles 1. This wonderful Silver Bodkin dates to the early 17th Century and is typical of the period. Unlike the vast majority of Bodkins from this period this Bodkin carries a makers mark of a Cinquefoil. This Bodkin is scratch engraved in typical 17th century manner, to both sides with a snake, the Cinquefoil mark found just below the snakes head to one side. I have unfortunately been unable to identify the makers mark. This rare example is slightly. Misshapen and this is reflected in the price. A bodkin is a needle like tool that was used for pulling tape through a series of loops. 17th Century clothing was often joined by such ribbons or leather straps. Bodkins were often carried on the person. The ribbon or cord was threaded through the rectangular slit. The small eye was used for hanging it up or suspending it from a belt or chatelaine. I always give the most accurate description I can including any/all flaws. I have dispatched items worldwide with, so far, no problems.
