






Very rare silver victorian Sampson Mordan HARE propelling pencil. Length 6.6cm closed, height 1.4cm, width 1.0cm. Stamped S Mordan & Co. Rarely seen on the market, Sampson Mordan (1790 to 1843) was a british silversmith and co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil, after his death, his sons continued the business. Novelty pencils included other animals including a fish, pig, owl and monkey, an egyptian mummy and other objects, these are highly collectible and occasionally crop up for sale at Sotheby’s and Christies.
