Very Rare Early Antique (1830) Leather Bound Book Ivanhoe By Sir Walter Scott

Condition of the book is commensurate with age. Generally in good order with the exception of a tear on the first page and a pen mark of the inside cover so please browse all photographs carefully. Kindly note Ivanhoe was first published by Archibald Constable in Edinburgh. All first editions carry the date of 1820, but it was released on 20 December 1819 and issued in London on the 29th by Hurst, Robinson and Co.. As with all of the Waverley novels before 1827, publication was anonymous. Scott was involved in minor changes to the text during the early 1820s but his main revision was carried out in 1829 for the’Magnum’ edition where the novel appeared in Volumes 16 and 17 in September and October 1830. So this particular book dated 1830 is the first of one of the very early revised editions making this book very sought after indeed! This book was published in September 1830 when King William IV (1765 – 1837) was on the throne in England. William IV was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 26 June 1830 until his death in 1837. Ivanhoe is a romance by Walter Scott is a historical novel published in three volumes, in 1819, as one of the Waverley novels. At the time it was written, the novel represented a shift by Scott away from writing novels set in Scotland in the fairly recent past to England in the Middle Ages. Ivanhoe proved to be one of the best-known and most influential of Scott’s novels. Set in 12th-century England, with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial, and divisions between Jews and Christians, Ivanhoe is credited for increased interest in chivalric romance and medievalism. John Henry Newman claimed that Scott “had first turned men’s minds in the direction of the Middle Ages”, while Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin likewise asserted Scott’s great influence upon the revival of interest in the medieval period, primarily based upon the publication of the novel Ivanhoe. Moreover, Ivanhoe much influenced popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John, and Robin Hood. In June 1819, Walter Scott still suffered from the severe stomach pains that had forced him to dictate the last part of The Bride of Lammermoor, and also most of A Legend of the Wars of Montrose, which he finished at the end of May. By the beginning of July, at the latest, Scott had started dictating his new novel Ivanhoe, again with John Ballantyne and William Laidlaw as amanuenses. For the second half of the manuscript, Scott was able to take up the pen, and completed Ivanhoe: A Romance in early November 1819. The standard modern edition, by Graham Tulloch, appeared as Volume 8 of the Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley Novels in 1998: this is based on the first edition with emendations principally from Scott’s manuscript in the second half of the work; the new Magnum material is included in Volume 25b. Ivanhoe is the story of one of the remaining Anglo-Saxon noble families at a time when the nobility in England was overwhelmingly Norman. It follows the Saxon protagonist, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, who is out of favour with his father for his allegiance to the Norman king Richard the Lionheart. The story is set in 1194, after the failure of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to their homes in Europe. King Richard, who had been captured by Leopold of Austria on his return journey to England, was believed to still be in captivity. The novel has been the basis for several opera, TV adaptations and motion pictures starring many famous actors and actresses including Sir Roger Moore, Kristen Holden-Ried, Rachel Blanchard, Stacy Keach, Margot Kidder and Nick Mancuso. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet FRSE FSAScot (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832), was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, playwright and historian. Many of his works remain classics of European and Scottish literature, notably the novels Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Waverley, Old Mortality, The Heart of Mid-Lothian and The Bride of Lammermoor, and the narrative poems The Lady of the Lake and Marmion. He had a major impact on European and American literature. As an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, he combined writing and editing with daily work as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Deputeof Selkirkshire. His knowledge of history and literary facility equipped him to establish the historical novel genre and as an exemplar of European Romanticism. He became a baronet “of Abbotsford in the County of Roxburgh”, Scotland, on 22 April 1820; the title became extinct on his son’s death in 1847. Walter Scott had an immense impact throughout Europe. Created for the first time a sense of the past as a place where people thought, felt and dressed differently. His historical romances “influenced Balzac, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Dumas, Pushkin, and many others; and his interpretation of history was seized on by Romantic nationalists, particularly in Eastern Europe”. An early and “highly influential translations was that of Defauconpret in France”. Many of the short poems or songs released by Scott (or later anthologized) were originally not separate pieces but parts of longer poems interspersed throughout his novels, tales, and dramas. In 1925 Scott’s manuscripts, letters and papers were donated to the National Library of Scotland by the Advocates Library of the Faculty of Advocates.
